Historically, lifestyle refers to a person’s basic character, which is shaped early on during childhood. It describes a person’s opinions, interests, cultural orientations, and behaviours. While it may be a complex term, lifestyle has come to be a popular terminology used to describe basic character traits. The concept of lifestyle was first introduced by Austrian psychologist Alfred Adler in his 1929 book The Case of Miss R. In the 21st century, many people define lifestyle as a person’s cultural, political, and social outlook.
Achieved by Alfred Adler in a 1929 book, lifestyle is a nebulous construct. It includes various factors related to personal values, demographics, and behavioural patterns. In 1961, the concept of lifestyle was defined as a basic character, or a “way of living”. This concept was a popular one, and has remained so even today. Among these factors, a person’s outlooks on life and the future is shaped by their lifestyle.
In addition to their social status, lifestyle includes their location. Some neighborhoods are more rural than others, while others have a more metropolitan environment. In urban areas, lifestyle refers to the way of life and the proximity to natural environments. The characteristics of a neighborhood will also determine how the lifestyle of an individual is. Often, a person’s habits and preferences will determine a person’s lifestyle. This is where the boundaries of a person’s lifestyle are drawn.
